What Do You Know About Our Company?

Do the research, do your homework, and prepare to answer this question since it may be asked at beginning of the interview.  Check the “About Us” page of the company’s website, pay attention to the company’s mission statement, products, and services, and current events.  Use these information to craft our answer.

Sample Answer:

” I know that Eyefinity provide e-business solutions for eyecare professionals to order products and lab materials, process online insurance claims, and improve practice management and marketing. Eyefinity serves more than 18,000 private eyecare practices and processes more than 25 million transactions per year.  I understand that the e-commerce services such as eClaim and eBuy run on Oracle database that requires high availability.  I have a lot of DBA experience supporting mission-critical database, that’s one of the reasons I applied for this DBA position.”

Would Working Overtime Or Irregular Hours Cause A Problem?

If you want to get this job, then express your willingness to work overtime or irregular hours.  Tell them you are willing to do whatever it takes to get your job done, and you had done this in previous jobs, that will impress the interviewer with your dedication to the company and your eagerness to succeed.

Sample Answers:

“No, working overtime or irregular hours would not be a problem. I’m very flexible and willing to work whatever hours are required.  In my current job, I worked overtime often when we need to meet the deadline.  I am willing to do whatever it takes to get my job done.”

Would You Be Willing To Relocate?

If you are willing to do so, say “Yes”, otherwise say you’d like to consider it.  Ask about what relocation assistance would be offered by the company?

Sample Answers:

“Yes. I am willing to consider relocating for this type of position. Could you give me more information on that possibility?  Does your company provide relocation assistance?”

Are You Willing To Travel?

In general this question is asked only if more or less travel is a required part of the job. If you want this job or at least want to give a try, then say “Yes.”.  Don’t forget to ask how much travel is expected so that you can make further analysis and decisions.

Sample Answers:

“Yes. I actually enjoy traveling and would have no problem with taking trips for business or training purposes. How much travel is required in this position?”

How Do You Define ‘Success’?

Making six figures at age 30 is a success, but you shouldn’t give a self-centered answer like this.  Try to link your success to the company’s vision or goals.

Sample Answer:

“For me, success is achieved by attaining goals, and my personal goals in my career are tied to the goals of the company I work for.  I know your company’s mission is to become the number 1 SOA software provider in financial industry, I am committed to help you achieve this goal. I consider it would be a big success for me when we deliver the best SOA software to the financial industry. “

What Did You Like Most About Your Last Job?

Say something good in general, such as team work, good people, management support, etc., of just say that you enjoyed everything about your previous job. But don’t make it sound too wonderful or they’ll ask a follow-up question about why you left.

Sample Answer:

“I really enjoyed the team atmosphere at my last job. Everyone worked together and it was a very positive environment. However, the career opportunities were limited and I felt it was time to move on.”

Name Three Adjectives That Best Describe You.

This question may be asked by HR, management, or other non-technical people.  There are many good words to choose:

Hard-working, dedicated, energetic, diligent
Skilled, knowledgeable, trainable, Innovative, creative
Friendly, flexible, likable, fair-minded
Loyal, trustworthy, conscientious reliable, patient, discreet, observant
Communicative, organized, detail-oriented, effective, efficient.

What Motivates You?

To most of us, the dollar. But employers don’t want hear this, they look for self-motivators which means you could be motivated by intangible things that don’t cost employers a lot.

Sample Answer:

“Simply doing a job well is very motivating for me. It gives me a sense of satisfaction to know I’ve done my best in everything I do. I take pride in my work, and in overcoming challenges. I also find it very rewarding to work with clients in various industries.  I love being an IT consultant and help my customers improve their business by implementing state-of-art technologies. “

Describe a situation where you used your own initiative to solve a problem

This question is to test your decision-making abilities and your willingness to go extra miles when you face a problem.  You may prepare an example for describing how you solve a unexpected problem emphasizing initiative.

What is the Toughest Problem You’ve Had to Face, and How did You solve It?

This is a commonly asked question in interview.  Again, it’s an excellent opportunity for your showcase.  Most of IT jobs are problem-solving oriented, if you can approve you are good at solving problems, you could get the job easily. (more…)
