I have dozen of friends who work as public employees on state IT jobs, — programmers, DBA, system admin, analyst, etc. They tell me the same thing: State jobs are easy, light work load, flexible schedule, and most important, their jobs are protected by the union, — the Service Employee International Union (SEIU) is one of the strongest, toughest unions in the whole world. Using the state of California as example, in Sacramento, the state capital, the top limit salary is about $76,000 per year for senior IT workers, — Senior Information Systems Analysts (DBAs, system administrators, software architects, etc) and Senior Programmer Analysts. In the same city IT workers with matching experience and skill levels should make $80,000 – $100,000. (more…)
